From mental health training to photojournalism scholarships, July brings a wide range of possibilities for reporters globally to advance in their careers. Check out these opportunities with deadlines next month and open to journalists across the globe:  

Investigative journalism training 

Deadline: July 4, 2022

Journalists, researchers and civil society investigators can apply for the Collaborative and Investigative Journalism Initiative and Tactical Tech’s online summer school. There, they’ll learn how to investigate the political influence industry, understand how data-driven technologies are used to influence voters and more. 

Refugee crisis webinar

Deadline: July 13, 2022

Poynter is hosting a webinar entitled, “How Many, Which Ones? The Refugee Crisis and U.S. Immigration Reform” for journalists who cover immigration. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the policies and politics that impact the decisions on which immigrants receive refugee status in the U.S.

Documentary fellowship 

Deadline: July 14, 2022

Filmmakers can apply for the International Documentary Association’s Getting Real Fellowship, which will take place in Los Angeles, California. Fellows will participate in curated one-on-one meetings with industry delegates, form long-lasting relationships with fellow documentary filmmakers and more. After two years of being remote, this year's conference will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual opportunities.

Photojournalism scholarship

Deadline: July 15, 2022

The Ian Parry Scholarship is seeking photographers and full-time photography students under 24 years old. The scholarship will help young photographers undertake a project of their choosing and raise their international profile. There is no entry fee to apply, and winners will receive cash prizes, new equipment and more. 

Rising media star award

Deadline: July 29, 2022

Professionals in the news media industry who are under 30 can compete for the International News Media Association’s (INMA) 30 Under 30 Awards. Winners will receive global recognition in a virtual announcement, free membership in INMA and more. 

Video journalism contest

Deadline: July 31, 2022

The Rory Peck Trust is accepting entries for the Rory Peck Awards, which honors freelance video journalists who cover international news and current affairs. Submissions must have been broadcasted between Aug. 1, 2021 and Aug. 1, 2022. Finalists will have the opportunity to be internationally recognized by top media outlets and industry professionals. 

Mental health course 

Deadline: July 31, 2022

Journalists globally can enroll in a course on mental health and journalism sponsored by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and The Carter Center. Throughout the five-week course, participants will learn how to take care of their mental health in a stressful industry and how to report on mental health issues.
