9 worldwide journalism opportunities to apply to in August

Lots of multimedia journalism opportunities with deadlines upcoming in August! These, in addition to fellowships for an investigative journalism conference, and reporting programs open to a wide array of journalists: check them all out below. Each opportunity is open to journalists worldwide.

Journalism fellowship in Germany

Deadline: August 1, 2021

Print and broadcast journalists covering politics, the economy, legal and constitutional topics can apply for the 2022 Journalist in Residence Fellowship 2022 from the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL). During the program, journalists will gain insights into international law, European Union law and public law. Participants will receive a research grant of EUR3,000 per month for the duration of the fellowship.

Grants for filmmakers

Deadline: August 2, 2021

The International Documentary Association (IDA) + XRM Media Incubator is awarding grants to filmmakers working on short character-driven vérité documentaries. Emerging documentarians can apply for a chance to receive $25,000 in funding. Submitted films must be completed by Nov. 2022.

Human rights film festival

Deadline: August 2, 2021

Documentary filmmakers can submit their films on human rights to the Watch Docs Festival, organized by the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, and which will take place in Warsaw, Poland in December. Entries must have been completed after Jan. 1, 2020, and be in English or Polish, or have English subtitles. Top submissions will be eligible for prizes.

Contest for video journalists

Deadline: August 4, 2021

Freelance video journalists who cover international news and current affairs can submit work to be recognized at the Rory Peck Awards, organized by the Rory Peck Trust. There are four awards: news, features, the Sony Professional Impact Award for Current Affairs and the Martin Adler Prize for a local  freelance journalist or field producer. Entries must have been broadcast between Aug. 1,  2020 and Aug. 4, 2021.

International film festival

Deadline: August 6, 2021

Filmmakers from around the world can submit their documentaries and feature films to the Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival, which will take place from May 1 to 31, 2022 in Japan. Submitted work must be in English or have English subtitles. The standard application fee is $100, and student application fee is $70.

Environmental photography contest

Deadline: August 14, 2021

Photographers and photojournalists who have captured images of the environment can submit their work to the Environmental Photographer of the Year competition. The contest will recognize work that showcases the environment and the way humans interact with the natural world. Winners will receive cash prizes and/or gifts.

Fellowships for investigative journalism conference

Deadline: August 17, 2021

The Global Investigative Journalist Network (GIJN) is offering fellowships to a select number of print and broadcast journalists from developing and transitioning countries to attend the 2021 Global Investigative Journalism Conference, from Nov. 1 to 5. Fellows will receive free admission to the conference, plus access to watch conference videos on demand after the event is over.

Environmental film festival

Deadline: August 27, 2021

Filmmakers and students who have created films that spotlight environmental issues can submit their work to be featured at Cinema Verde, an environmental film and arts festival, will take place in Gainesville, Florida in February. The festival showcases films from around the world that bring awareness to environmental challenges and sustainable solutions.

Reporting fellowship in the U.S.

Deadline: August 31, 2021

Print, broadcast and online journalists from developing countries can apply for the annual Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, which bring journalists to U.S. newsrooms. Applicants must have at least three years of professional experience, current full-time employment as a journalist, be between 25 and 35 years old and have a good level of spoken and written English. The program starts in mid-March and ends in early September.
