Director job opening

Deadline: September 1, 2025

Senior editorial leaders can apply now for the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford’s director of journalist programs position. The director will be responsible for leading on delivery, strategic development and long-term financial sustainability of all journalism programs at the institute. The salary range is GBP62,728 to GBP72,691.

Human rights film festival

Deadline: September 1, 2025

People in Need’s One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival will take place on March 11-19, 2026 in Prague. There are nine categories including international competition best director, student jury award, Czech competition, and more. Entries should be in English or include English subtitles.

Literature contest

Deadline: September 1, 2025

Creative writers can now submit poetry, nonfiction and fiction stories to Terrain.org’s 16th Annual Contest in Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction. Applicants can submit one to five poems in a single document. They can also submit a fiction story or nonfiction essay/article with a total of 5,000 words. Finalists will receive publication and US$200. 

Business journalism seminars

Deadline: September 3, 2025

The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School is accepting applications for the Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists, which aims to help participants improve their reporting skills and gain insights into key business and economic issues. Topics that will be covered include accounting principles, financial markets and more. Funding opportunities are available for those interested in attending this event. 

Residency program

Deadline September 10, 2025

Journalists and visual artists can apply now for the MacDowell Colony, which is a free residency program in Peterborough, New Hampshire, that provides time and space for reporters to work on long-form projects. Participants will receive a stipend, in addition to a reimbursement for travel to and from the colony. The application fee is US$30.

Fellowship

Deadline: September 11, 2025

The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program at Harvard is seeking applications from journalists and film, video, sound and new media artists. Fellows will pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions and creative arts. The institute provides stipends of up to $78,000 for eight months. Journalists must have worked professionally in the field for at least five years. 

Journalism contest

Deadline: September 15, 2025

Journalism organizations and journalists can nominate themselves or their colleges for the Fetisov Journalism Awards, which aim to recognize reporters for their contribution to the promotion of universal human values and extraordinary heroism. Entries must have been published between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025. Winners will receive cash prizes. 

Environmental photography grants

Deadline: September 16, 2025

Vital Impacts is offering the Vital Impacts Environmental Photography Grants for established and emerging environmental photographers. Grants will fund documentary projects that spotlight solutions-based environmental narratives. Projects about the Pacific Northwest and the Amazon rainforest are preferred. One established photographer will receive a US$20,000 grant and five emerging photographers will receive a US$5,000 grant each to develop their projects.

Book fellowship

Deadline: September 26, 2025

Journalists, writers and others working on a book project can apply now for the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center fellowship. Fellows will work on projects and engage in an ongoing exchange of ideas within the center and in public forums through the library. This program provides up to US$90,000, an office, a computer and full access to the library’s resources.
