Now’s the perfect time of year to be applying to some of the world’s most prestigious journalism fellowships. But these applications can be arduous and time-consuming tasks with many components to be completed. To make sure you don’t miss any crucial deadlines, it’s essential to start preparing ahead of time.

So if you’re on the lookout for the fellowship that will kick-start your career, keep these nine opportunities — and their deadlines — in mind:

Reuters Journalism Fellowship Program Deadline: Jan. 31, 2017

Midcareer journalists can head to Oxford University for three or six months of research work with this fellowship from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. Fellows produce an academic paper on a topic of their choosing while taking in Oxford’s academic, cultural and social life. Projects that focus on journalism and democracy; business of journalism; journalism practice; and media policy are especially sought. For more information, click here.

Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship at Harvard Deadline: Feb. 1, 2017

Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government is hosting the Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship, which allows journalists to share, expand and research public policy and political affairs. The Fellowship in Global Journalism Deadline: Feb. 1, 2017

Professionals in any field can report on their specialization for top media outlets around the world as a Munk School of Global Affairs global journalism fellow. During the fellowship, participants receive mentoring from leading journalists. The fellowship covers CAD10,000 (US$7,469) of CAD26,000 (US$19,419) tuition, and fellows receive two years of free online coaching once the program ends. For more information, click here.

Reynolds Journalism Institute fellowship Deadline: Feb. 1, 2017

Journalists and media professionals who want to advance innovation in journalism can apply for a fellowship at the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) in Columbia, Missouri. This year’s program is seeking projects on on solving problems created by filter bubbles, fake news and mistrust of the news media, as well as other topics. Spencer Fellowship for Education Journalism Deadline: Feb. 1, 2017

The Spencer Fellowship for Education Journalism, offered by Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, allows journalists, educators and researchers to spend one year conducting academic research at Columbia University. Knight-Bagehot Fellowships Deadline: Feb. 15, 2017

The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism allows journalists to grow their understanding of business, economics and finance for one year at Columbia University in New York. Fellows take courses tuition-free at Columbia's graduate schools of journalism, business, law and international affairs and attend seminars, briefings and field trips with New York-based media organizations and financial institutions. World Press Institute Fellowships Deadline: Feb. 15, 2017

Non-U.S. journalists can apply to this fellowship and expand their knowledge of American journalism and media. Knight Science Journalism Fellowships at MIT Deadline: Feb. 28, 2017

Journalists who report on science can apply to the Knight Science Journalism Program, a nine-month, two-semester program at MIT that aims to spur vigorous, accurate and independent coverage of science and technology. Fellows take part in seminars, digital media trainings, workshops, field trips and more. A $70,000 stipend is provided, along with other benefits. For more information, click here.

Data Journalism Awards Deadline: April 7, 2017

This year’s Data Journalism Awards, organized by the Global Editors Network, are open for entries. Winners receive a US$1,801 prize and are recognized at an awards ceremony in Vienna. Past winners include BuzzFeed, Quartz, The New York Times, The Guardian, ProPublica and La Nación, in addition to smaller outlets like Ojo Publico, Civio Foundation and Convoca.
