We’re already nearly halfway through 2025. Those goals you set at the beginning of the year? Don’t fret, there’s time to get back to them — or refocus on new ones. 

Now is the perfect time to do a check-in with yourself. And fortunately, our new list of opportunities with deadlines next month has something for every journalist to apply for. 

International film festival

Deadline: July 2, 2025

The Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival is accepting documentaries and feature films of any length and genre. Entries must be submitted in English or include English subtitles. Categories include live action narrative, documentaries, feature scripts and screenplays, and more. Standard application fees start at US$25.

Media Business Forum

Deadline: July 2, 2025

Media professionals, journalists, editors, marketing specialists, journalism researchers and more can register for the Stockholm School of Economics Riga’s Reinventing Media Business Forum, which will take place on Sept. 17 and 18 in Riga, Latvia. This event brings together the media business community to provide the latest professional knowledge, help discover hidden opportunities and more. Ticket prices start at EUR150.

Mountain book competition

Deadline: July 3, 2025

The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is organizing the Banff Centre Mountain Book Competition, which celebrates mountain literature in all its forms. Each book entry must include five finished copies of the book or two advance reading copies, and be first editions published in 2024 or 2025. Winners will receive cash prizes. 

Video journalism contest

Deadline: July 10, 2025

Freelance and video journalists who cover international news and current affairs can apply now for the Rory Peck Awards honoring freelancers and filmmakers. Entries must have been broadcast between July 5, 2024 and July 10, 2025, and be in English or include a detailed storyline and translation.

Narrative journalism grants

Deadline: July 13, 2025

Family and friends of Kari Howard and the International Women’s Media Foundation are offering the Kari Howard Fund for Narrative Journalism, which awards grants up to US$5,000. Projects reported and published in English anywhere in the world can be submitted. Women and nonbinary journalists with at least three years’ experience are eligible to apply.

Short film festival

Deadline: July 15, 2025 

The Vilnius Short Film Festival is accepting short fiction, documentary, animation, experimental or hybrid films completed after Jan. 1, 2024. Submissions can be up to 30 minutes in length and must be in English or include English subtitles. 

Child rights reporting award

Deadline: July 20, 2025

Journalists who cover children’s rights can submit their work to Save the Children’s second edition of the Global Media Awards. Entries must be original and published in a national, regional or international media outlet between Aug. 31, 2024 and July 1, 2025. Winners will receive a personalized certificate and invitation to attend an international press trip or program visit.

Reporter job opening 

Deadline: July 31, 2025 

The incubator for Media Education and Development (iMEdD) is launching YOJO, a digital-first newsroom of young journalists, who will shape the future of independent journalism. iMEdD is offering paid placement opportunities at its cutting-edge newsroom in Athens, Greece. Recent graduates or final-year college students interested in journalism are eligible to apply.

Global scholarship

Deadline: July 31, 2025

Students can apply for the Rhodes Trust’s global scholarships to study at the University of Oxford in England. Funding is intended for applicants who are motivated to engage with the global challenges facing humankind, and committed to the promotion of international understanding and peace. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and be fluent in English.
