With 2024 just a few days away, now is the perfect time to start working on your career goals for the new year. Our list of opportunities with deadlines in January includes contests, fellowships and more for journalists globally. 

Travel fellowship

Deadline: January 1, 2024

The United Nations Foundation is seeking journalists who are interested in global health issues to apply for its press fellowship focusing on polio eradication. Fellows will participate in a virtual training session on polio and receive up to $10,000 for reporting costs. 

Visual storytelling contest

Deadline: January 11, 2024

Professional visual journalists can now submit their digital projects to the World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest. The contest has four format-based categories: singles, stories, long-term projects and open format. Entries must have been published in 2023 in English or with English subtitles.

Photo contest

Deadline: January 15, 2024

The Foundation for Systemic Change and the Social Documentary Network are accepting entries for the ZEKE Award for Systemic Change, which recognizes outstanding visual stories documenting systemic changes and leading to sustainable solutions to global issues. Winners will be featured in ZEKE magazine and in a traveling exhibition.

Science journalism fellowship

Deadline: January 15, 2024

Mid-career journalists covering science, technology, the environment or medicine can apply now for the Knight Science Journalism Fellowships, which provide fellows with a US$85,000 stipend plus tuition for an academic year at MIT. English proficiency and three years of experience as a reporter, writer, editor, producer, illustrator or photojournalist are required. 

Journalism fellowship

Deadline: January 15, 2023

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University is seeking journalists with at least two years of experience and fluency in English and another language for the Global Journalist Fellowship. This program offers a US$16,000 stipend and two semesters of funding to study at one of the institute’s master’s programs. Fellows can choose from nine concentrations.

Data journalism contest

Deadline: January 17, 2024

Data journalists can apply now for the Sigma Awards, sponsored by the Google News Initiative. This year’s competition aims to highlight the best data reporting on any topic. Works must have been published in 2023. US$5,000 will be distributed among the winners.

Grants for young journalists

Deadline: January 19, 2024

GEO magazine is offering a EUR5,000 grant for young journalists and photojournalists, ages 30 or younger, with a story idea. Candidates must submit proposals that fit into GEO’s editorial line: exploration of new territories, the environment, people and society, geopolitics and more. The chosen article will be produced in 2024.

Student journalism contest

Deadline: January 22, 2024

U.S. and international students can submit their work to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards, which honor the best in student journalism. Anyone studying toward an academic degree and enrolled in a U.S. or international college or university in 2023 can apply. 

Science journalism program

Deadline: January 25, 2024

The Logan Science Journalism Program at the University of Chicago’s Marine Biological Laboratory is organizing two intensive workshops for science and environmental journalists interested in learning how to perform basic biomedical and environmental research in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Applicants must have at least three years of experience.

Investigative reporting contest

Deadline: January 31, 2024

Print, broadcast and online reporters who focus on bribery cases can apply now for TRACE International’s prize for investigative reporting, which focuses on uncovering commercial bribery with the goal of advancing in the business community. Entries must have appeared in 2023. Winners will receive cash prizes.
