With 2024 coming to an end, and the winter holidays upon us, now is the perfect time to get an early start on your career goals for the new year. Here is our curated list of workshops, grants and scholarships with deadlines next month, available to media professionals globally:
Travel fellowship
Deadline: January 3
Journalists interested in global health issues can apply now for the United Nations Foundation’s press fellowship focusing on polio eradication. Fellows will participate in a virtual polio training session and receive funding up to US$10,000 to travel to a country at the forefront of the battle to eradicate polio.
Media project grants
Deadline: January 7
The National Endowment for Democracy is seeking proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions. Grant amounts vary depending on the project’s size and scope, but typically last 12 months and provide around US$50,000. Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations are eligible for funding.

Writing workshop
Deadline: January 8
Mid-career journalists who with English writing and speaking proficiency can apply now for the George R.R. Martin Summer Writing Workshop, organized by Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Fellows will arrive with an idea for a novel they will write and leave the workshop with the foundation of solid chapters and pages.
Scholarships for master’s program
Deadline: January 10
The Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Journalism, Media and Globalisation is accepting applications from students who wish to pursue a graduate degree and have proficiency in English. Students will spend their first year studying at Aarhus University in Denmark and their second year studying at a European partner university in either Amsterdam, London, Prague or Munich. Scholarships of up to EUR10,000 are available, which over tuition fees and insurance. A stipend up to EUR6,000 is also provided.
Photography contest
Deadline: January 15
Professional and amateur photographers can apply for the ZEKE Award for Systemic Change, organized by the Foundation for Systemic Change and the Social Documentary Network. The competition recognizes outstanding visual stories documenting systemic changes that lead to sustainable solutions to global issues.
Science journalism program
Deadline: January 15
The Logan Science Journalism program at the University of Chicago’s Marine Biological Laboratory is organizing two intensive workshops for science and environmental journalists, who are interested in learning the process of basic biomedical and environmental research. Course fees, room, board and travel will be covered.
Reporting grants
Deadline: January 17
Young journalists and photojournalists, ages 30 or younger, with a story idea can apply now for GEO magazine’s EUR5,000 grant, which helps with a reporting project to be published in French in GEO’s print and web editions. The winner will be announced in April 2025.
Investigative journalism contest
Deadline: January 30
The Sidney Hillman Foundation is seeking entries for its Hillman Prizes, which honor investigative journalism and commentary that serves the common good. Journalists and photographers can submit their work. Winners will receive a cash prize and a certificate.
Business journalism fellowships
Deadline: January 31
Business and economics journalists with at least four years of experience can apply now for the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism’s Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism, which aims to enhance reporters’ understanding of business, economics and finance. Fellows will receive free tuition and a stipend to offset living expenses.
