Are Reporters Prepared to Cover a Disaster?

1) Do they know their subject? If the answer is no, consider sending your reporters to seminars that help them to understand the subject of the story or, bring experts into the newsroom to conduct a lunch-time discussion on topics such as:

  • how a nuclear power plant works
  • why a particular area is subject to flooding
  • mining operations
  • manufacturing plant operations
  • prisons,
  • municipal agencies responsible for infrastructure

2) Establish reporting teams for working in danger zones.

3) Equip reporters with necessary gear:

  • cell phones
  • rain gear or other protective gear for reporters and equipment
  • batteries/charger
  • plastic garbage bags
  • portable radio
  • medical kit
  • mosquito repellent
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • toilet paper
  • towels
  • heavy duty tape
  • water and high energy snacks pager

4) Have a back up plan in case something fails.
