We’ve compiled a list of fellowships, grants and contests with deadlines in May. Each opportunity is open to journalists globally.
Food and agriculture fellowship
Deadline: May 1, 2022
Oregon State University is seeking journalists and freelancers for its Food and Agriculture Media Fellowship in Corvallis, Oregon. Fellows will learn how food and agriculture impact Oregon, the nation and the world.
Human rights photo contest
Deadline: May 1, 2022
Professional and amateur photographers who cover human rights issues or anti-corruption efforts can submit their work to the Allard Prize Photography Competition. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Coastal resilience media grants
Deadline: May 2, 2022
Earth Journalism Network (EJN) and the Kingfisher Foundation have created grants to assist with reporting and media development activities on topics related to coastal resilience. Media outlets, universities and journalism institutions are eligible to apply.
Journalism service award
Deadline: May 13, 2022
Innovative journalists who create impactful content about internet-related subjects can apply for the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award, created by the Internet Society. The winner will receive a US$20,000 honorarium.
Documentary grants for visual journalists
Deadline: May 15, 2022
Women Photograph, Getty Images and Nikon are accepting applications for their documentary grants that support emerging visual journalists. Women and non-binary documentary photographers can apply for funding.
Visual journalism contest
Deadline: May 17, 2022
Photojournalists and documentarians can submit their work to the Visa pour l’Image - Perpignan Festival, which recognizes visual journalism around the world. Winners will receive EUR8,000 (US$9,483).
Media project grants
Deadline: May 25, 2022
The National Endowment for Democracy is seeking grant proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions. Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can apply.
Digital storytelling scholarships
Deadline: May 31, 2022
Journalists and media professionals can apply for a digital narratives MA program, offered by the ifs internationale filmschule köln. The program provides scholarships to reporters who wish to pursue a master’s degree in digital storytelling.
