Documentary film festival
Deadline: June 1, 2024
Documentary filmmakers can submit their work to the Pärnu Documentary and Science Film Festival, which focuses on folk arts, disappearing cultures and the future of young people. Films must include commentary, dialogue or subtitles in English. The registration fee is EUR15.
Investigative projects award
Deadline: June 2, 2024
The DIG Awards is seeking filmmakers and audio storytellers who have produced investigative works. Winners will be chosen at the 10th edition of DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. This year’s contest will feature a pitching category.

Media project grants
Deadline: June 3, 2024
Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can submit proposals for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions to the National Endowment for Democracy, for the chance to win US$50,000 in grant funding on average.
War correspondents contest
Deadline: June 6, 2024
The Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents honors coverage of conflict situations or news events relating to the fight for freedom and democracy. Entries must have been published or aired between June 1, 2023 and May 31, 2024. Winners will receive EUR7,000.
Environmental communication award
Deadline: June 10, 2024
Journalists, filmmakers and documentarians can apply now for the BBVA Foundation’s Biophilia Award in Environmental Humanities and Social Sciences, which recognizes contributions from the humanities, communication and social sciences. The winner will receive EUR100,000, a diploma and more.
Freelance journalism contest
Deadline: June 14, 2024
The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund and the Thomson Reuters Foundation are organizing a competition to honor the work of freelance journalists, local reporters and fixers in developing countries or nations in transition who often otherwise receive little recognition. All articles must be translated into English. Winners will receive a US$5,000 prize.
Science fellowship
Deadline: June 17, 2024
Journalists interested in covering research of Earth, planetary or space sciences can apply now for the European Geosciences Union’s Science Journalism Fellowship competition. Fellows will follow geoscientists on location to develop an understanding of their research questions, findings and more. Fellows will receive funding.
Short story contest
Deadline: June 24, 2024
Grist is accepting applications for its annual climate fiction short story contest, “Image 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors.” Applicants must submit stories between 3,000 and 5,000 words. The winner will receive US$3,000. Second and third-place winners will also receive cash prizes.
Manuscript prize
Deadline: June 30 2024
Cassava Republic Press is accepting entries for its Global Black Women’s Non-Fiction Manuscript Prize, which seeks to amplify the long tradition of Black women writers as knowledge-makers and critical thinkers. Applicants must submit manuscripts that incorporate theory with personal essays or experiences. Winners will receive a publishing contract and more.
