9 worldwide journalism opportunities to apply to in November

Believe it or not, there are just two months left in 2021 — plenty of time to pursue another professional opportunity, or two. Check out these fellowships, contests and job applications with deadlines next month. All are open to journalists globally. 

Reporting fellowships

Deadline: November 1, 2021

The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for a gender equality fellowship, a justice fellowship and a climate science fellowship. Fellows will receive mentorship from the Pulitzer Center staff and grantees, network with professional reporters and editors, and participate in workshops. Fellowship winners will receive a US$3,000 stipend.

Human rights/anti-corruption photo contest

Deadline: November 1, 2021

Photographers who cover human rights issues or anti-corruption efforts can apply for the Allard Prize Photography Competition. Entries should focus on themes of courage and leadership in combating corruption, especially through promoting transparency, accountability and the rule of law, and of human rights and/or anti-corruption generally. The Allard Prize Committee will select up to six photographs as winners. Winning entrants will receive CAD1,000 (US$797) each.

Safety training course

Deadline: November 2, 2021  

Vice Media, in partnership with A Culture of Safety Alliance (ACOS Alliance), is offering a limited number of free spots for freelance journalists to participate in the “Hostile Environments and First aid Training (HEFAT)” course. The in-person course will be held Nov. 16 to 18 in London, U.K.

Sports media contest

Deadline: November 4, 2021  

The International Sport Press Association has launched its 2021 Sport Media Awards. Categories include writing (best column and best color piece), photography (action picture and portfolio), audio, video (short feature, athlete profile and documentary) and young reporter under 30. The first, second and third place winners in the eight senior categories will receive US$8,000, US$3,000 and US$2,000, respectively. The winner in the young reporter category will receive a scholarship to attend a top international event.

Climate journalism course

Deadline: November 15, 2021

The Oxford Climate Journalism Network, launched by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, is offering its first course. The six-month course will provide journalists with individual support in identifying relevant sources, sessions with world-leading experts and connections with colleagues at other news organizations.

Violence prevention reporting course

Deadline: November 19, 2021

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), is offering the Violence Prevention Reporting Program, which will implement a two-week online course designed to enable journalists around the world to strengthen their reporting on issues related to violence against children, and effective interventions. Journalists who produce stories on issues covered in the course will be given preference for participation in the subsequent phase of the program. They will also be eligible for reporting grants and dedicated virtual mentorship.

New media writing contest

Deadline: November 26, 2021 

The Media School at Bournemouth University is accepting entries for its New Media Writing Prize, for innovative and interactive storytelling (fiction or nonfiction). Students, bloggers, artists and writers can submit entries. The contest winner will receive GBP1,000 (US$1,285).

Photography grants

Deadline: November 30, 2021

The Aftermath Project is offering a US$25,000 grant for photographers who tell the other half of the story of conflict. This year's grant will focus on 1492/1619 American Aftermaths; proposals may relate to a wide interpretation of America’s original sins. 

Photo competition

Deadline: November 30, 2021

The World Photography Organization is accepting entries from professional, amateur and young photographers for its annual Sony World Photography Awards. Winners will receive photo equipment from Sony, a trophy, a certificate and global press exposure. The winners’ entries will be presented at the World Photo London exhibition.
