With the new year quickly approaching, the time of goal setting and vision boarding will soon be in full swing. If you are still struggling to figure out what new career goal you want to pursue, don’t worry – our list of fellowships, competitions and grants all with deadlines next month has you covered! 

Ethical leadership fellowship 

Deadline: January 3, 2023 

Graduate journalism students and recent graduates can apply for the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, which is a two-week summer program in Germany and Poland. Fellows will examine the role journalists played in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, as well as their place in covering current issues that raise ethical concerns today.

Solutions journalism fellowship

Deadline: January 4, 2023

The Solutions Journalism Network is accepting proposals for the 2023 LEDE Fellowship, which gives journalists access to exclusive professional development sessions on storytelling, engagement, fundraising, equity and more. Fellows will also receive funding.

Biodiversity conference scholarship 

Deadline: January 6, 2023

Journalists globally are eligible for scholarships up to US$2,500 to cover biodiversity conferences. Internews’ Earth Journalism Network is offering scholarships to reporters originating from low or middle income countries who are interested in attending and reporting on conferences and global summits related to biodiversity issues. 

Visual storytelling contest

Deadline: January 10, 2023

The World Press Photo Digital Storytelling Contest is seeking entries of professional photography in combination with audio and visual elements such as video, animation, sound or text. Entries must have been published this year in English or with English subtitles. Winners will receive cash prizes. 

Environmental journalism grants

Deadline: January 18, 2023

Independent and staff journalists, freelancers, journalists’ collectives, photographers  and producers can apply for the Pulitzer Center Rainforest Journalism Fund’s Dom Phillips Reporting Grants. Reporting ideas must focus on solutions for the future of the Amazon. 

Data journalism contest

Deadline: January 19, 2023

The Sigma Awards is accepting entries from reporters whose work displays the best in data journalism. Submissions must have been published in 2022. A US$5,000 overall cash prize  will be distributed among the winners. 

Student journalism contest

Deadline: January 23, 2023

U.S. and international students can submit their work to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards, which recognizes the best in student journalism. Applicants must be studying toward an academic degree enrolled in a U.S. or international college or university this year. 

Short Film Festival

Deadline: January 31, 2023

The Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2023 is calling for nonfiction short films that explore societal issues and diverse lives around the world. Entries must be under 25 minutes and have been produced after June 1, 2021. Films not in English or Japanese must include English subtitles. Winners will receive cash prizes and more.
