With September quickly approaching, many are ready for a fresh start, and eager to find new opportunities. Check out these fellowships, festivals and grant applications with deadlines next month. Each opportunity is open to journalists globally. 

Human rights film festival 

Deadline: September 3, 2021

Documentary filmmakers who focus on human rights can submit their work to the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, organized by the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union. Winners will receive cash prizes. All submissions must have been produced between 2020 and 2022.  

Creative writing contest

Deadline: September 6, 2021

Terrain.org is seeking submissions for its 12th Annual Contest in Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction. Contestants can submit three to five poems or one long poem, one fiction story and one nonfiction essay with a total of 5,000 words. Winners will receive publication and more. 

Radcliffe Institute fellowship 

Deadline: September 9, 2021

Journalists and film, video, sound and new media artists can apply for this fellowship in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program provides fellows with stipends, office or studio space, and access to libraries and other resources at Harvard University to complete their proposed projects.

Science journalism conference seeks proposals 

Deadline: September 12, 2021

The World Federation of Science Journalists is seeking proposals for its conference, which will be held next summer in Medellín, Colombia, and online. Science journalists, researchers and media professionals can propose ideas for topical sessions, panels, workshops and more. 

UN Sustainable Development fellowship 

Deadline: September 15, 2021

Think Different Global is seeking journalists who are interested in working on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to apply for the Great Thinkers International Fellowship 2021 Program. During the program, fellows will engage in producing online blogs, talks and events.

Nominations open for Free Press Awards 

Deadline: September 15, 2021 

Free Press Unlimited wants to recognize journalists who have a strong commitment to press freedom and independent information. These awards aim to honor reporters who risk everything to bring the news to the public. Winners will receive scholarships or cash prizes. 

New York Public Library fellowship

Deadline: September 24, 2021

Journalists, writers and others working on a book project can apply for the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center fellowship. Fellows will receive up to US$75,000, a computer, an office and full access to the library’s resources. During the program, fellows will work on their own projects and engage in an ongoing exchange of ideas. 

International film festival 

Deadline: September 30, 2021

The Hainan Island International Film Festival 2021 is seeking submissions from filmmakers and documentary directors. This event will take place in December in Hainan, China. Films must have been produced after Aug. 15, 2020 and they must have English subtitles.
