Now is the perfect time to get started on your applications for some of the most prestigious journalism fellowships for journalists around the world. These applications can be complicated, so the earlier you start your application, the better.

Here is a list of fellowships that will take your career to the next level. Keep an eye on these opportunities — and their deadlines.

Resilience Fellowship

January 4, 2021

The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime is organizing this yearlong fellowship program that aims to build a platform for collaboration between civil society actors, human-rights activists, journalists and others working to counter the effects of organized crime. Fellows will receive US$15,000, mentoring and networking opportunities.

O'Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism

January 23, 2021

Marquette University, in partnership with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, is accepting candidates for this fellowship program, during which fellows spend nine months researching, reporting and writing stories with potential to change policies and improve lives. Due to COVID-19, the program may be remote.

Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism

January 31, 2021

The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is accepting applications for this fellowship program, which aims to enhance journalists' understanding of business, economics and finance. The fellowship is open to business and economy reporters worldwide.

New America Fellowship

February 5, 2021

The New America National Fellows Program seeks ideas that have an impact and spark new conversations about today's most pressing issues. Fellows are expected to advance ideas through research, reporting, analysis and storytelling. Projects must be original, ambitious and viable. Some ideas may include writing a book, developing a series of articles or producing a documentary. It is open to journalists worldwide.

Journalist Fellowship Programme at the Reuters Institute

February 8, 2021

Experienced journalists around the world can apply for this prestigious fellowship at Oxford University. Fellows research a topic of their choosing along with the broader media industry while taking in Oxford’s academic, cultural and social life. Applications will open in January for the next cohort.

Joan Shorenstein Fellowship at Harvard University

March 1, 2021

Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government is hosting the Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship, which allows journalists to share, expand and research public policy and political affairs. What is normally a residential fellowship was completely online this year due to the pandemic, and it’s unclear what will happen in the future. In any case, applications will open soon, which must be submitted by March.

Non-fellowship opportunities

Other opportunities for journalists worldwide that are quickly approaching are the Kim Wall Memorial Fund from International Women’s Media Foundation (deadline Jan. 16), which supports women journalists, and the Sigma Awards (deadline Feb. 1), a data journalism competition that recognizes work around the world.
