Climate reporting mentorship program

Deadline: September 4, 2020

Environmental journalists ages 18 to 35 can apply for a paid mentorship program from Climate Tracker. Twelve selected journalists will produce stories on climate for Climate Tracker and take part in training on social media engagement, data and visual journalism and podcasting. Learn more here

Scholarship to attend science journalism conference

Deadline: September 4, 2020

The World Congress of Science and Factual Producers (WCSFP) will take place online in December. The event focuses on how science and history are communicated to the world. Producers and content creators working in science, history and nonfiction media can apply to attend this conference for free. Click here for more information

Grants for media projects strengthening democracy

Deadline: September 14, 2020

Independent media organizations, civic groups and associations can apply for grants from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). NED will award funding up to US$50,000 to projects that seek to promote and defend human rights and the rule of law, support freedom of information and independent media, and promote accountability and transparency. Grants fund investigative journalism

Deadline: September 14, 2020

The Fund for Investigative Journalism will award grants to support investigative projects that break new ground and expose wrongdoing such as corruption, malfeasance or misuse of power. Proposals must come from U.S.-based reporters or international journalists whose stories have a U.S. angle, involving American citizens, government or businesses. Click here to learn more.

Entrepreneurial journalism training program

Deadline: September 15, 2020

The Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York's Craig Newmark School of Journalism has launched a new certificate program to help journalism entrepreneurs develop ventures. The remote program will last 100 days starting in October. Tuition is US$4,000 but limited scholarships are available. Click here for more information

Investigative journalism fellowship

Deadline: September 16, 2020

English-speaking journalists can apply for the TRACE Investigative Reporting Fellowship from The Alfred Friendly Press and the Trace Foundation. After an orientation and training at the Missouri School of Journalism, fellows will spend five months at a major U.S. news outlet. All expenses will be covered. Learn more here. 

Fellowships support racial justice and public health journalism

Deadline: September 25, 2020

Publishers, programmers, web designers, media analysts, academics and journalists can apply for the 2021 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellowships from the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. These virtual fellowships can last up to 20 weeks, and are intended to support research projects designed to advance racial justice and public health journalism in the U.S. Click here to learn more. 

Fellowships for writers working on book projects

Deadline: September 25, 2020

Journalists, writers and others working on a book project can apply for New York Public Library's Cullman Center Fellowship. Fifteen selected fellows will spend nine months working in the library, beginning in September 2021. Fellows receive a stipend to work on their own projects and engage in an ongoing exchange of ideas. Learn more here.
