Looking to learn about climate change, work with top investigative editors or receive recognition for your latest film project? Check out these competitions, fellowships and festivals with deadlines in August. Each opportunity is open to journalists globally. 

Science journalism contest

Deadline: August 1, 2022

Science journalists can submit their work to the Kavli Foundation’s AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards. Entries must have been published between July 16, 2021 and July 15, 2022. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Environment and adventure film competition

Deadline: August 3, 2022

The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is seeking the best films about mountains and the spirit of adventure for its Banff Mountain Film Competition. Films produced in 2020, 2021 and 2022 are eligible for submission.

Climate change fellowship

Deadline: August 5, 2022

Journalists interested in covering climate change, sustainable development and biological science can apply for the United Nations Foundation’s environmental fellowship. Fellows will be taken to the heart of the Amazon to explore issues of biodiversity, deforestation and more. 

Disability journalism contest

Deadline: August 7, 2022

The National Center on Disability and Journalism is accepting submissions for the Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability. Entries must have been published between July 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022. Winners will be awarded cash prizes.

International film festival

Deadline: August 12, 2022

Filmmakers can submit their documentaries and feature films to the Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival, which will take place from May 1 to 31, 2023 in Japan. All entries must be submitted in English or with English subtitles. 

Investigative journalism fellowship

Deadline: August 15, 2022

Reuters and Durham University are seeking early-career journalists for their investigative journalism fellowship. Fellows will undertake an investigative project and be mentored by top Reuters editors in the field.

Health reporting fellowship

Deadline: August 16, 2022

Journalists globally can apply for the National Press Foundation’s health journalism fellowship. Fellows will receive grants up to US$3,000 to support reporting projects focused on rare diseases anywhere in the world. 

Environmental film festival

Deadline: August 27, 2022

Cinema Verde, an environmental film and arts festival, is accepting entries from filmmakers and students who have created films that spotlight environmental issues. This festival will take place in Gainesville, Florida in February 2023.
