8 worldwide opportunities with deadlines in February

With the first month of 2024 already coming to an end, many of us may still be trying to figure out what next steps we want to take in our careers. Our list of global opportunities with deadlines next month has something for both those who still are deciding what to accomplish and those looking for ways to achieve yearlong goals:

Science journalism contest

Deadline: February 1, 2024

The National Association of Science Writers is organizing the Science in Society Journalism Awards, which recognizes investigative or interpretive reporting about the sciences and their impact on society. Entries must have been published last year. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Digital media officer job opening

Deadline: February 11, 2024

Individuals with experience in the field of human rights and democracy, as well as experience in journalism or digital media can apply now for the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies’ digital media officer job opening. The position is based in Tunis.

Diversity fellowship

Deadline: February 12, 2024

The Maynard Institute is seeking journalists of color for the Maynard 200 Journalism Fellowship. Fellows will participate in workshops, a yearlong mentorship and supplementary courses. Applicants living outside the U.S. must be affiliated with a U.S.-based media outlet or organization.

Environmental reporting workshop

Deadline: February 12, 2024

Journalists from all media who want to improve their environmental reporting skills can apply for the Metcalf Institute’s virtual and in-person workshop. Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of research practice, climate science and more to break local climate change stories.

Journalism fellowships

Deadline: February 19, 2024

The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism is seeking midcareer journalists for its Journalist Fellowship Program at Oxford University. Applicants must have at least five years of journalism experience and strong English skills. Most fellowships are fully-funded and cover living costs and accommodations. 

Conflict reporting fellowship

Deadline: February 21, 2024

Midcareer journalists who want to deepen their knowledge of trauma and improve their coverage of violence, conflict and tragedy are eligible to apply for the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma’s fellowships. Fellows will attend background briefings, participate in intellectual engagement, peer learning and more.

Program scholarships

Deadline: February 29, 2024

DW Akademie is offering 10 full scholarships for its International Media Studies program in Bonn, Germany. Young journalists, media managers and other communication professionals can apply. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, at least a year of professional media experience and a good command of English. 

Immigration film festival

Deadline: February 29, 2024

Filmmakers can now submit their work to the Slovenian Philanthropy’s Festival of Migrant Film, which recognizes entries that highlight diverse topics related to immigration, asylum seekers and refugees and more. Submissions may be in any language, but must include subtitles if they are not in Slovene or English.
