8 worldwide opportunities with deadlines in August

While more than half the year may be gone already, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to set a new career goal or start a new project. Check out these competitions, job openings and grants with deadlines in August and open to journalists globally.

Science journalism contest

Deadline: August 1, 2023

Science journalists can apply for the Kavli Foundation’s AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards, which recognize outstanding reporting for a general audience and honor individuals for coverage of the sciences, engineering and mathematics. Entries must have been published between July 16, 2022 and July 15, 2023. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Disability reporting contest

Deadline: August 1, 2023

The National Center on Disability and Journalism’s Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability is seeking submissions from journalists at print, broadcast and online outlets. Entries must have been published or aired between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023.

Film competition

Deadline: August 2, 2023

Filmmakers can apply for the Banff Mountain Film Competition, organized by the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Applicants can submit films in several categories, including climbing, mountain sports and more. The grand prize winner will receive CAD5,000. Winners for the best film in each category will receive CAD3,000.

Bilingual press officer

Deadline: August 10, 2023

The French Embassy in Chile is looking for a bilingual press officer (French and Spanish) to monitor different Chilean media outlets and social media, provide daily press reviews in French and more. Journalists with excellent written and oral proficiency in French and Spanish, as well as a strong command of social media, are eligible to apply.

Photography competition

Deadline: August 27, 2023

Photographers can submit their work to the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, which is a globally renowned competition that celebrates the hilarity of the natural world and highlights what needs to be done to protect it. The overall winner will receive a one-week safari in Kenya and more. 

Environmental film festival

Deadline: August 27, 2023

Cinema Verde, an environmental film and arts festival, is seeking entries from filmmakers and students who have created films that spotlight environmental issues. Documentaries, short and full-length feature films, and more will be recognized.

Humanitarian project grant

Deadline: August 31, 2023

Photographers, videographers and content creators are eligible to apply for Action Against Hunger’s grant for a new humanitarian perspective. The scholarship is intended to be a place for the exploration of new narrative and iconographic processes. The winner will receive a grant of EUR10,000 to carry out their project.

Collaborative journalism contest

Deadline: August 31, 2023

Hostwriter is hosting a contest for professional and amateur journalists who have worked or will work on a story together, and have used or will use the platform in some way during their research. Entries may be published in any language, but works not in English must include a translation.
