Journalists interested in criminal justice reporting can apply for this free training.

Poynter, in partnership with The Marshall Project and the Vera Institute of Justice, is organizing "A journalist’s guide to covering jails" July 21 to 22 in Memphis and Sept. 8 to 9 in Minneapolis.

Participants will learn the causes and consequences of local jail incarceration and explore some ways that communities are addressing the issue.

The program will be led by Al Tompkins, senior faculty for broadcast and online at Poynter.

Accepted applicants will receive most meals and hotel but must cover their own travel.

The deadline is June 1 for Memphis and July 1 for Minneapolis.
