Looking to expand your journalism toolkit, take on a new beat or receive recognition for your work? Check out these promising courses, fellowships and competitions with deadlines in February. Each is open to journalists worldwide.

  • Documentary fund seeks projects Deadline Feb. 1

The IDFA Bertha Fund is looking for new creative documentary projects from developing countries. The fund supports documentary filmmakers and festivals with financial contributions to allow recipients to complete their projects. Grants range from EUR5,000 to EUR17,500 (US$6,795 - US$23,785), depending on the category. Categories include project development, production, post-production and documentary festivals.   • Scholarships for journalism courses Deadline: Feb. 4

Mid-career journalists from several developing countries can apply for scholarships to attend training courses with the Radio Nederland Training Centre (RNTC). Scholarships to cover travel costs, accommodation and course fees are available for courses on the following topics: broadcast management, social media, training of trainers, media development and video journalism.   • Photo competition on women’s empowerment Deadline: Feb. 11

The Thomson Reuters Foundation and Nokia invite photographers and photojournalists to submit images that capture women’s empowerment in their countries. The winning image will receive the Thomson Reuters Foundation-Nokia Award, an all-expense-paid trip to attend a professional mobile journalism training course and a Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone.   • Pulitzer grant for crisis reporting Deadline: Feb. 14

Journalists interested in crisis reporting who reside outside the United States can apply for the Persephone Miel Fellowship. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and Internews provide this US$7,500 travel grant to complete a reporting project that focuses on a global crisis that is under-reported in the mainstream American media.   • Journalism innovation fellowship Deadline: Feb. 15

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) in Columbia, Missouri, in the U.S. invites proposals from people who have innovative ideas to improve the practice or understanding of journalism. RJI welcomes applications from individuals inside and outside the media industries. The institute offers residential, non-residential and institutional fellowships ranging from US$20,000 - US$80,000.   • UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize Deadline: Feb 15

Journalists, organizations or institutions that promote press freedom worldwide can be nominated for a US$25,000 award. The UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize will recognize a significant contribution to press freedom, especially in high-risk areas. Member states, international/regional organizations or professional/non-governmental organizations working in the field of journalism and freedom of expression can nominate up to three candidates.
