Looking to expand your journalism toolkit, take on a new beat or receive recognition for your work? Check out these promising courses, fellowships and competitions with deadlines in March. Each is open to journalists worldwide.

Columbia University business journalism fellowships Deadline March 1

Business and economics journalists worldwide with at least four years of experience can apply for a fellowship in New York. The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is accepting applications for its Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism, which aims to enhance journalists' understanding of business, economics and finance. Fellows receive free tuition plus a US$55,000 stipend to offset living expenses. Click here for more information.

Deutsche Welle blogging contest Deadline March 5

Online journalists and bloggers worldwide are eligible for an award. Deutsche Welle is accepting entries for its BOBs contest - Best of Online Activism, which aims to promote freedom of expression and human rights activism on the Internet and around the world. Submissions to the contest can be in the any of the following languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian. Reporting competition for stories about Asia Deadline March 7

Journalists who have covered stories on Asia can apply for a US$10,000 award. The Asia Society seeks nominations for the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia. Nominations are open to online or print journalists who produced the best example of journalism about Asia during 2013. Click here for more information.

Scripps Howard reporting internship in Washington Deadline March 15

Undergraduate journalism or communications students worldwide who are fluent in English can apply for the Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Internship Program, designed to give students abroad an opportunity to cover events in the U.S. capital. Airfare, housing, a daily meal/living/transportation allowance and health insurance are provided. Click here for more information.

United Nations reporting fellowship Deadline March 31

Journalists 25 to 35 years old from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean can apply for a fellowship to report on the United Nations. The fellowship, sponsored by the Dag Hammarskjöld Scholarship Fund for Journalists, gives participants the opportunity to report on international affairs during the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Media studies program offers scholarships Deadline March 31

DW Akademie is accepting applications for its four-semester International Media Studies program (IMS) in Bonn, Germany. Ten full scholarships are offered to applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin America or Eastern Europe. The scholarships include a monthly stipend of EUR750 (US$1,020), plus tuition fees and traveling costs. Click here for more information.
