Environmental journalism contest accepting entries Deadline April 1
Journalists may submit their environmental reporting to a Society of Environmental Journalists contest. The awards honor journalists in seven categories, including feature stories, in-depth reporting, outstanding photography and books. International journalists are encouraged to enter, but an English translation must accompany work written in a different language. Click here for more information.
Global Editors Network data journalism contest Deadline April 4
Journalists working for media companies and nonprofit organizations, freelancers or individuals can enter the Data Journalism Awards (DJAs), run by the Global Editors Network (GEN). Eight winning entries will share EUR16,000 (US$21,990) in prizes. The awards ceremony will take place in Barcelona during the Global Editors Network Summit, an annual event hosting 500 editors-in-chief worldwide. Click here for more information.
NED offers grants for media projects Deadline April 4
The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking proposals from nongovernmental organizations, including independent media worldwide, for projects that advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions. Grant amounts vary depending on the size and scope of the projects, but the average grant lasts 12 months and is around US$50,000. Click here for more information.
Human rights fellowship for female journalists Deadline April 11
Print, broadcast and online women journalists who focus on human rights and social justice can apply for a yearlong fellowship with the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF). The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow will spend an academic year in a tailored program with access to MIT's Center for International Studies and media outlets like The Boston Globe and The New York Times. A stipend will be provided, and expenses, including airfare, housing and health insurance, will be covered. Click here for more information.
BRITDOC Foundation hosts documentary competition Deadline April 28
Documentary filmmakers are encouraged to submit their documentaries to compete for a EUR50,000 prize. The BRITDOC Foundation is currently accepting submissions for its PUMA Impact Award, which recognizes documentary films that have had a societal impact. Filmmakers must also be able to submit data demonstrating the film’s social impact. Click here for more information.
