Looking to expand your journalism toolkit, take on a new beat or receive recognition for your work? Check out these promising courses, fellowships and competitions with deadlines in July. Each is open to journalists worldwide.

Ian Parry Scholarship for photojournalists Deadline July 7

Photographers under age 24 and those enrolled as full-time photography students can apply for The Ian Parry Scholarship, aiming to help young documentary photographers undertake a chosen project and raise their international profile. The first place winner will receive GBP3,500 (US$5,880); the runner-up will receive GBP500 (US$840). In addition, the Sunday Times Magazine will publish a selection of images from the competition, and Reportage by Getty Images will add the winner to its online Emerging Talent group. Society of Environmental Journalists reporting grant Deadline July 15

Journalists worldwide can apply for a US$3,500 grant to report on environmental projects and entrepreneurial ventures around the globe. The Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) offers grants to provide incentives and support to journalists who are building an environmental platform and are struggling financially to complete the project. The funds should serve to cover project-related travel, training, research materials, environmental testing and other direct expenses that pertain to the completion of the project. United Nations contest for digital professionals Deadline July 15

The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) seeks young multimedia professionals who use the Internet and mobile technology to put the UN Millennium Development Goals into action and make a difference. Participants must be under 30 years old and citizens of U.N. member states. Eighteen winners will be invited to the WSYA Winners' Event from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 in São Paulo, with travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the organizers. National Press Foundation funds travel to health conference Deadline July 18

The National Press Foundation is offering all-expenses-paid fellowships for journalists to learn about lung health issues and cover the 45th Union World Conference on Tuberculosis and Lung Health in Barcelona, Spain. Fellowships cover conference registration, travel expenses, hotel accommodations and a per diem. Selected journalists must have at least three years of reporting experience that includes health coverage. Special consideration will be given to applications from journalists in low- and middle-income countries, along with China, India, Russia and South Africa. Click here for more information.

Fellowship for science journalists Deadline July 31

Journalists and bloggers with at least three years of professional journalism or blogging experience covering science can apply for the Falling Walls Foundation fellowship. Fellows will have the opportunity to visit the Falling Walls Lab and attend the Falling Walls Conference in November in Berlin. The fellowship includes travel expenses, lodging for three nights and conference fees. Click here for more information.
