Course scholarships

Deadline: May 2, 2024

The News Product Alliance and the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY are offering full and partial scholarships for their New Product Management Certification course. Participants will gain an understanding of management methodologies and more. Mid- to senior-level news professionals who are passionate about solving complex problems in the news industry are eligible to apply.

Biodiversity story grants

Deadline: May 5, 2024

Journalists interested in investigative or enterprise reporting on biodiversity or conservation topics can apply for Earth Journalism Network and Arcadia’s Biodiversity Story Grants, which support reporting that highlights untold threats to global biodiversity or explore new conversation-based solutions. Grants up to EUR5,000.

Photo essay competition

Deadline: May 6, 2024

Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is accepting entries for the 2024 Banff Mountain Photo Essay Competition, which aims to showcase the best in mountain-themed photo essays. Submissions must include three to five images and a short description. The winner will receive CAD3,000. 

Online journalism contest 

Deadline: May 9, 2024

Online journalists, digital news organizations and students can submit their work now for the Online News Association’s 2024 Online Journalism Awards, which recognize excellence in digital reporting. Entries must have been published between May 26, 2023 and April 30, 2024. The contest offers several awards totaling US$57,000. 

Photography grants

Deadline: May 15, 2024 

Women Photograph and MPB are offering documentary grants for women and non-binary documentary photographers. Five US$5,000 grants will be awarded to support either new or in-progress documentary projects. Multimedia projects are welcome.

Film contest

Deadline: May 20, 2024

Filmmakers can compete now for Yale Environment 360’s film contest. Submissions should focus on an environmental issue and be a maximum of 20 minutes in length. First, second and third place winners will be awarded cash prizes.

Environmental reporting fellowship

Deadline: May 26, 2024 

The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for its Ocean Reporting Network Fellowship, which will establish a collaborative ecosystem of journalists that will uncover the illegal practices of the fishing and extractive industries. Reporters with a proven track record of environmental investigations are eligible for this remote program. 

Environmental film festival 

Deadline: May 27, 2024

Filmmakers and students who have created films that spotlight environmental issues can enter their work in Cinema Verde, an environmental film and arts festival. Entry fees vary according to categories and range from US$20 to US$65. 

Video competition

Deadline: May 31, 2024 

The PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival is seeking filmmakers ages 25 and younger to submit films on migration, diversity, social inclusion and prevention of xenophobia. Videos must be less than five minutes long, include English subtitles and be produced after Jan. 1, 2021. Winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the festival and award ceremony.
