Looking for funding for your next reporting project or to improve your journalism skills? Check out these grants, contests and fellowships with deadlines in March. All opportunities are available to journalists globally.

Conflict reporting fellowship

Deadline: March 1, 2023

The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma is selecting 12 to 14 mid-career journalists for its Ochberg Fellowship to deepen reporting knowledge of trauma. Fellows will attend background briefings by prominent interdisciplinary experts in the trauma and mental health fields. 

Literary reporting grants

Deadline: March 2, 2023

Early-career nonfiction writers who are authoring a story that uncovers truths about the human condition can apply for the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute’s Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award. Winners will receive US$12,500, New York University ID and more.

Photography contest

Deadline: March 3, 2023

The International Women’s Media Foundation is seeking nominations for the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. Nominations must be in English and include 12 photographs that best represent the scope and style of their candidate’s work. The winner will receive a cash prize. 

Climate journalism contest 

Deadline: March 15, 2023

News organizations and journalists can submit their work to Covering Climate Now and the Columbia Journalism Review's climate journalism competition. Works must have been published or broadcasted in 2022 and in English. 

Investigative journalism conference

Deadline: March 27, 2023

The Global Investigative Journalism Network, Fojo Media Institute and Föreningen Grävande Journalister are seeking research papers to present at the 13th Global Investigative Journalism Conference. Submissions can highlight trends in investigative reporting, successful methods of teaching investigative, computer-assisted reporting and more. 

Joan Shorenstein Center fellowship

Deadline: March 31, 2023

Journalists with at least five years of experience, who are interested in sharing, expanding and researching public policy and political affairs can apply for Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government’s Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship. Fellows will receive a stipend, a desk in the Shorenstein Center offices and more.

Diversity fellowship

Deadline: March 31, 2023

The Maynard Institute and Fox Corporation are organizing the Maynard 200 Journalism Fellowship, which offers training in storytelling, executive leadership and more. Applicants living outside of the U.S. need to be affiliated with a U.S.-based media outlet or organization.

Graduate scholarships

Deadline: March 31, 2023

Young journalists, media managers and other communication professionals can apply for DW Akademie’s International Media Studies Program. This program offers a mix of research, lectures and practical experience on media management, communications and more.
