10 worldwide opportunities with deadlines in September

With August coming to an end, this is the perfect time to start a new project or to learn a new skill. Check out these trainings, competitions and grants all with deadlines next month. Each opportunity is open to journalists globally. 

Comedy wildlife photography contest

Deadline: September 1, 2022

The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards is seeking entries for its 2022 competition, which celebrates the hilarity of the natural world and highlights what needs to be done to protect it. The overall winner will receive a one-week safari in Kenya and more. 

Poetry, fiction and nonfiction contests

Deadline: September 5, 2022

Creative writers can submit their poetry, nonfiction and fiction stories to the 13th Annual Contest in Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction, created by Terrain.org. Contestants will compete for a US$1,000 grand prize and publication in each genre.

Investigative training program

Deadline: September 6, 2022

The Atlantic Council Digital Forensic Research Lab is accepting applications for the 360/Digital Sherlocks program. Journalists will engage in practical training on open-source investigative methodologies, interactive conversations on digital governance and tech policy, and more.

Entrepreneurial journalism training

Deadline: September 6, 2022

Aspiring media entrepreneurs fluent in English can apply for the Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators Program, created by the City University of New York’s Craig Newmark School of Journalism. Participants will learn how to identify and build an audience, craft a business model by understanding market needs and revenue opportunities, and more. 

Public policy fellowship

Deadline: September 7, 2022

Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government is accepting applications for its Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship. Fellows will receive a stipend, computer, workstation and more to share, expand and research public policy and political affairs. Journalists with at least five years of experience and fluency in English are eligible to apply. 

Conference scholarships 

Deadline: September 9, 2022

Producers and content creators working in science, history and nonfiction media can apply for a bursary to attend the World Congress of Science and Factual Producers in Glasgow, U.K. The Emerging Producers Bursary Program offers scholarships that cover the registration fee, travel, accommodation, tailored advice to navigate the conference, and more. 

Literary residency program

Deadline: September 10, 2022

The MacDowell Colony is a residency program in Peterborough, New Hampshire that provides time and space for journalists to work on long-form projects. Participants will receive a stipend depending on their needs, and additional funding to reimburse travel. 

Investigative journalism fellowship

Deadline: September 16, 2022

Journalists proficient in English can apply for the TRACE Investigative Reporting Fellowship, created by the Alfred Friendly Press and the Trace Foundation. Fellows will attend training courses on topics such as ethics, writing and editing. Fellows will then join one or more major U.S. media outlets for five months. 

Climate misinformation grants

Deadline: September 30, 2022

Meedan is accepting applications from media practitioners and newsrooms for its Check Global Independent Media Response Fund. The fund provides grants to support independent media workers and grassroots media initiatives that aim to address a wide range of climate-related misinformation topics. 

Business journalism fellowship

Deadline: September 30, 2022

Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply for the McGraw Center for Business Journalism’s fellowship program, which supports in-depth coverage of business and the global economy. The fellowship provides editorial and financial support to reporters to tackle complex, time-consuming stories.
