World Press Freedom Day has announced its 2011 sponsors, who will be helping promote the global conversation on media freedom.
This year’s conference for World Press Freedom Day will take place from May 1 to 3 in Washington, D.C. The aim of the event, organized by UNESCO and hosted for the first time by the United States, is to celebrate, evaluate and defend journalism. The event also pays tribute to journalists who have given their lives for their work.
A grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is providing leading funding for the event. Other donors, including Omidyar Network and the Open Society Foundations, are providing support for international speakers and participants to attend the conference. In addition to UNESCO, the event planning committee includes organizations such as the Center for International Media Assistance at the National Endowment for Democracy and IREX. More than 20 non-governmental organizations and companies are also working together to help organize the event.
