Mobile reporting: New web resource offers tips, tools and case studies

Oct 30, 2018 в Mobile Journalism

A new resource offers an excellent road map for journalists, citizen reporters, news outlets and media development organizations seeking to harness the power of mobile technology.

The Mobile Media Toolkit offers comprehensive guides to key mobile reporting, delivery and engagement skills, a guide to the latest mobile tech tools and more than a dozen case studies of mobile media projects from Sri Lanka to South Africa.

The toolkit teaches journalists and citizen reporters how to: shoot photos, create audio, capture video, report from a mobile phone and add location information to content to add valuable geographic context to reports.

The toolkit also offers advice on distribution, sharing, and engaging with social media. It has primers on how to deliver content using SMS, mobile apps and websites, how to listen to your audience and more. A section on security helps people in insecure regions use mobile tech more safely.

It also presents lessons learned from mobile information projects such as Young Africa Live, whose goal is to engage young Africans with a mobile-based community where they can find information about HIV/AIDS, relationships, sex, and gender. Each case study analyzes the project’s target audience, goals, challenges and successes.

Produced by MobileActive.org, a network of people using mobile technology for social impact, the toolkit is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation (which also helps support IJNet). It is available in Arabic, English and Spanish.

Jennifer Dorroh is the director of IJNet.
