From securing gigs and negotiating better contracts to organizing invoices and creating a budget, freelancing can be a difficult field to navigate. While being free from an office is an attractive quality that draws in many freelancers, the lack of a home media organization can pose its own challenges.
In our latest IJNet Live chat, we’re going to address as many of your questions about freelancing as possible, and introduce you to a network of freelancers all around the world.
What’s the best format for an invoice? Where can you find new training opportunities? How can you form freelancing networks with other journalists?
No question is too big or too small for our chat leaders.
The chat will be happening in our Slack community on Tuesday, June 5 at 10 a.m. EST.
If you’re unfamiliar with Slack, it’s an online collaboration app that encompasses everything from instant messaging to video chat.
We launched the IJNet Slack community last May, but this is the first chat we’ll be hosting on this platform. For this event, we’ll only be using the messaging function.
How do I sign up?
To sign up, all you have to do is fill out the form at the bottom of the page. The form will include instructions about how to register for IJNet’s Slack community if you haven’t done so already.
On the day of the event, login to Slack and visit the #general channel.

Chat leaders
Mridu Khullar Relph is a freelance journalist, author, entrepreneur and founder of The International Freelancer. Currently based in London and New Delhi, she has written for The New York Times, TIME, CNN, ABC and many others across four continents.
Jacob Kushner is a freelance journalist who writes about asylum and migration, development economics and inequality, foreign aid and investment, and governance. Farahnaz Mohammed was a nomadic journalist, now turned mainly to marketing. Her writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, The Guardian, Nautilus, The Gleaner, Quartz and others. She writes about culture, international relations, women's rights and mental health.
