9 worldwide opportunities with deadlines next month

The new year is already in full swing, but many journalists may still be deciding their intended outcomes for 2025. Our list of global opportunities with deadlines in February includes journalism contests, early-career fellowships, and more that will help you identify and achieve your goals for this year: 

Science journalism contest

Deadline: February 1, 2025 

Science journalists and writers can apply now for the National Association of Science Writers’ Science in Society Journalism Awards, which recognizes investigative or interpretive reporting about the sciences and their impact on modern society. Works must have been published in 2024. Winners in each category will receive US$2,000.

International journalism awards

Deadline: February 6, 2025

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is seeking nominations for the 2025 ICFJ Knight International Journalism Award. Journalists whose reporting or media innovations are making an impact on the lives of people in their countries and regions can be nominated. Winners will be honored on Nov. 13 at ICFJ’s 2025 Tribute to Journalists.

Literary residency program

Deadline: February 10, 2025

Journalists and visual artists can apply now for the MacDowell Colony, a residency program that provides time and space for writers, composers, filmmakers, playwrights and others to work on long-form projects. A stipend will be provided, depending on the applicant’s need, in addition to funding for travel to and from the Colony. 

Professional journalism contest

Deadline: February 11, 2025

The Society of Professional Journalists is seeking entries for its Sigma Delta Chi Awards, which honor the best of professional journalism. Entries not originally published or broadcast in English must include an English transcript or English subtitles. Winners will be announced in July.

Journalism excellence awards

Deadline: February 12, 2025

Journalists who have published stories in 2024 and are members of the Asian American Journalists Association can apply for the Journalism Excellence Awards. Submissions that display outstanding storytelling, in-depth reporting that moves the industry and pieces that demonstrate impact are highly encouraged. 

Hackathon 

Deadline: February 14, 2025

Teplitsa of Social Technologies is hosting an online hackathon with the theme, “Technologies against war, repression, propaganda and secrecy.” Participants can join individually or as part of a team. Activists, researchers, IT specialists, journalists, designers and all data enthusiasts are encouraged to apply. The total prize pool is US$7,500.

Press freedom contest

Deadline: February 15, 2025

Journalists, organizations or institutions that promote press freedom can be nominated for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. The award will recognize a significant contribution to press freedom, especially in high-risk areas. Nominations must be submitted in English or French and include a brief biography or history of the nominee. 

Fellowship for early-career journalists

Deadline: February 28, 2025

Training for Good is organizing the Tarbell Fellowship, in which early-career journalists will receive a nine-month placement at a major newsroom and participate in a study group covering AI governance and technical fundamentals. Fellows will receive stipends up to US$50,000. This program is hybrid and will run from June 2025 to May 2026.

Investigative journalism contest

Deadline: February 28, 2025

Investigative journalists who have reported in developing or emerging countries are eligible for the Global Investigative Journalism Network’s Global Shining Light Award. Entries must have been published between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2024, and be in English or include an English transcript or subtitles. Winners will receive an honorary plaque, cash prizes and more.
