If you still need an internship for this summer, you might feel like you're out of luck. In late October and early November, deadlines passed for many internship opportunities, including spots at The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Chicago Tribune.
Fortunately, many news organizations are still accepting applications for summer interns. Here's a look at the eight most promising paid internships and fellowships to apply for over your winter break:
Google News Lab Fellowship, Deadline: Dec. 15
U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with a knack for tech-driven storytelling may apply for a Google News Lab Fellowship. The fellowship begins in June with a one-week stay at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. From there, fellows will spend the next nine weeks at places like the Center for Investigative Reporting, Poynter, Nieman Journalism Lab and more. AP Global News Internship Program, Deadline: Jan. 7
U.S. and international students as well as recent graduates can apply for AP's Global News Internship, a paid, individually-tailored training program that focuses on multiplatform journalism. Interns will spend 12 weeks at one of AP's bureaus worldwide, contributing text, video, photo and interactive reporting under the guidance of a designated trainer. Click here for more information.
CBS News summer 2016 internship, Deadline: Feb. 28
Undergraduates who have completed their sophomore year of college may apply for a paid internship in New York City or Washington, D.C. with CBS News. Interns will learn the fundamentals of newsgathering and broadcast production. A 3.0 GPA is recommended, and summer interns are expected to work full-time for an hourly wage. Slate summer internships, Deadline: March 15
Slate is seeking paid interns to work at its offices in New York and D.C. Interns can work in any of the following departments: culture, politics, video, The Slatest and photo and art. The internship is 30 hours per week. Click here for more information.
The Nation internships, Deadline: March 28
Early-career journalists with an interest in journalism and publishing can apply for the Victor S. Navasky Internship Program, provided by The Nation. Interns will be immersed in the magazine's editorial processes and will provide fact-checking and research support to staff at the magazine's New York offices. Educational seminars with professional journalists, scholars and activists will also be available to interns. Interns are paid US$15 per hour, or US$525 per week, with grants for housing and travel available to those who need them. Click here for more information.
Chicago Magazine editorial internships, Deadline: April 1
Journalism students and recent graduates can apply for an internship with Chicago Magazine in Chicago. In addition to pitching and writing stories for the magazine, interns will offer assistance with fact-checking and research. The internship pays minimum wage, and interns work four days a week. CNN International summer internship, Deadline: rolling
College juniors, seniors and graduate students who are currently enrolled in school can earn internship credit with CNN International at its headquarters in Atlanta. Interns will get hands-on experience at every step of the newsgathering process, from crafting scripts to accompanying producers to shoot stories. Interns are paid at minimum wage. Time Inc. summer internship, Deadline: rolling
Undergraduate and graduate students can apply for a paid summer internship with Time Inc. in New York. For eight to 10 weeks, editorial interns will develop content for brands like Time, People and Sports Illustrated through writing, photography, graphics or design. Click here for more information.
