News startups in Latin America can apply for funding and expert consulting.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) and SembraMedia, with financial support from Luminate, has launched Velocidad

The accelerator program will invest US$1.5 million in promising news media startups in Latin America and accelerate their efforts to grow into thriving businesses.

Candidates must be independent, digital native media, producing public interest content in Spanish or Portuguese for more than six months prior to their application.

The selection process consists of three rounds. A total of 75 digital news outlets will move forward in the first round, 25 semi-finalists will continue to the second, and eight to 10 will be chosen to receive investments.

All semi-finalists will receive a report with recommendations and a scholarship for full access to SembraMedia’s online school. Finalists will have ongoing access to in-depth audience metrics thanks to a partnership with Chartbeat.

The deadline to apply is July 1.
