The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is offering a free introductory MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on infographics and data visualization. Through a series of readings, video lectures and tutorials, University of Miami professor Alberto Cairo will give participants the skills they need to start producing infographics right away. MIT offers boot camp for journalists on energy, climate Deadline Oct. 11
The Knight Science Journalism Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will host a three-day intensive course on energy and climate, which will take place at MIT's campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The course will explore the fact and fiction of climate change and the intersection of science and politics. Selected journalists will receive accommodation, meals and a US$750 travel stipend. Human rights fellowships open Deadline Oct. 16
Human Rights Watch (HRW) presents the Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship, open to recent graduates in journalism, international relations or law at the master's level or beyond. Fellows will work with HRW in New York or Washington for a year, monitoring human rights developments worldwide, conducting on-site investigations and drafting reports, media outreach and more. Fellowships begin September 2014 and offer a US$55,000 salary with benefits. Click here for more information.
World Press Photo offers Tim Hetherington grant Deadline Oct. 17
Photojournalists and visual journalists can apply for a EUR20,000 grant (about US$26,520) to complete an existing project on a human rights theme. World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch created the grant to honor Tim Hetherington, a photojournalist killed in Libya in 2011. Only those who have participated in a World Press Photo competition between 2008 and 2013 may apply. Click here for more information.
Documentary fund seeks entries Deadline Oct. 7
Independent documentary filmmakers with completed or nearly completed films can apply for a grant up to GBP50,000 (about US$80,021). The Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund supports outreach campaigns for films on social issues that can lead to impact on a local, regional or global level.
