Journalists and journalism students based in the Legal Amazon region in Brazil can apply for this program.

Amazônia Vox, with the support from Instituto Serrapilheira and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), is seeking applicants for the program "Voices, science and communication in the Amazon".

The initiative aims to map as many leaders and researchers as possible in the Amazon region to feed the sources database maintained by Amazônia Vox, in order to amplify the dissemination and visibility of the scientific knowledge about the Amazon produced by local voices.

There are eight microgrants available for journalists with at least five years of experience, and eight microgrants for journalism students. Each participant will receive BRL3,000 in three installments for the duration of the program.

Selected journalists and students will get free training before the program starts, and will have the opportunity to pitch stories by the end of the project. Successful pitches will receive a grant for the completion of the story.

The project will select one journalist and one student based in eight out of the nine states from the Legal Amazon: Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins. Grantees from the state of Amapá have already been selected through a pilot project.

The application deadline is Jan. 10, 2025 for participants based in Pará and Amazonas; Feb. 10, 2025 for Acre, Rondônia and Roraima residents; and May 10, 2025 for Maranhão, Tocantins and Mato Grosso residents.
