Looking to expand your journalism toolkit, take on a new beat or receive recognition for your work? Check out these promising courses, fellowships and competitions with deadlines in September. Each is open to journalists worldwide.

Fund for Investigative Journalism grants Deadline Sept. 8

The Fund for Investigative Journalism offers US$5,000 grants to support investigative projects around the world. Grants cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs, but not grantees’ salaries or equipment. All proposals must be submitted in English and include a detailed budget. United Nations journalism contest Deadline Sept. 15

The United Nations Correspondents Association will recognize journalists who cover the U.N. across four categories - print and online, broadcast, climate change and humanitarian/development. The prizes amount to over US$50,000 that will be distributed among the winners. Entries can be submitted in any of the official U.N. languages (English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and Russian). Register for Social Media Week Held Sept. 22-26

Social Media Week features free events surrounding the latest trends and topics in social and mobile media. Events will be held in metropolitan centers around the globe, including Berlin, Chicago, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Mumbai, Rome, Rotterdam, São Paulo and Sydney. Carmignac Gestion photojournalism grant Deadline Sept. 28

Photojournalists worldwide can apply for the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award, recognizing photographers who visit zones that are largely ignored by the mainstream media. The winner will receive a EUR50,000 (US$66,844) grant to fund a photo series on the lawless areas in France, completed over a period of several months. Click here for more information.

The Times foreign correspondent fellowship Deadline Sept. 29

The Richard Beeston Fellowship offers GBP6,000 (US$10,250) for an aspiring foreign correspondent to spend six weeks abroad, researching and reporting on a foreign news story for the newspaper. A further award of GBP6,000 (US$10,250) is available to a journalist who has experience working in Lebanon, the West Bank or Israel to undertake a six-week fellowship at The Times foreign desk in London. Grants for peace building projects Deadline Sept. 30

Journalists, filmmakers and activists can submit project proposals on peace building and conflict resolution for up to US$50,000 in funding from the Journalists and Writers Foundation. Some possible themes include peace education; pluralism and multiculturalism; early warning and conflict prevention; post-conflict reconciliation; and gender equality and empowerment.
