Looking to expand your journalism toolkit, take on a new beat or receive recognition for your work? Check out these promising courses, fellowships and competitions with deadlines in December. Each is open to journalists worldwide.

John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships: Deadline Dec. 1

Each year, the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships select 20 fellows – 12 U.S. and 8 international – to spend an academic year at Stanford University. During their fellowship, they will address a journalism challenge and explore potential solutions. The 10-month fellowship includes a US$65,000 stipend as well as supplements for housing, childcare, health insurance and moving expenses. Click here for more information.

Rockefeller Bellagio Residency Program: Deadline Dec. 1

The Bellagio Residency Program, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation, offers participants the opportunity to establish new connections and solve complex global issues. The residency program lasts two to four weeks, and room and board in Italy is covered for all residents and their partners. Click here for more information.

Nieman-Berkman Fellowship: Deadline Dec. 1

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Center for Internet & Society will host at least one fellow for an academic year to carry out a research project on journalism innovation. Journalists worldwide working for news organizations in a business, technology or leadership capacity can apply. Click here for more information.

Thomson Reuters Global Journalism Internships: Deadline Dec. 1

The Thomson Reuters Global Journalism Internship program is accepting applications for its 2015 summer cycle. Interns will be placed at one of the organization's international bureaus such as Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Mexico City, New York, São Paulo, Singapore, Tokyo, Toronto and Washington. CUNY business journalism fellowship: Deadline Dec. 15

The McGraw Center for Business Journalism at the City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism offers a fellowship program to support in-depth coverage of business and the global economy. Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply for a three-month fellowship. The program is accepting applications for long-form print or radio pieces. Fellows will receive US$5,000 a month for three months. Click here for more information.

National Press Foundation fellowship: Deadline Dec. 16

The National Press Foundation offers 20 fellowships for journalists to attend a health conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The seven-day program will focus on tobacco's global impact on health. Conference registration, round-trip air or train travel, hotel accommodation and per diem expenses are included in the fellowship. Click here for more information.

United Nations Democracy Fund grants: Deadline Dec. 31

The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) is inviting civil society organizations to apply for funding projects to advance and support democracy using media. Project grants range from US$100,000 to US$300,000. Click here for more information.
