How to publish stories to Medium

When Medium co-founder Ev Williams announced the beta launch of his new blog-publishing platform in 2012 he described it as "a new place on the Internet where people share ideas and stories that are longer than 140 characters and not just for friends." (Journalism.co.uk, 4/7)

Turkey blocks YouTube and, briefly, Twitter over hostage photo

ISTANBUL — As a hostage crisis at the central courthouse gripped this city last week, a photograph coursing through social media conveyed the situation more concisely than any words: a beret-wearing militant, face obscured by a red scarf, holding a gun to the head of a well-known prosecutor.

After an evening raid by Turkish special forces ended with gunfire, leaving two militants and the hostage dead, the debate that ensued was not over the wisdom of the raid but over the publication of the photograph. (The New York Times, 4/6)

Rolling Stone’s investigation: ‘A failure that was avoidable’

Last July 8, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, a writer for Rolling Stone, telephoned Emily Renda, a rape survivor working on sexual assault issues as a staff member at the University of Virginia. Erdely said she was searching for a single, emblematic college rape case that would show “what it’s like to be on campus now … where not only is rape so prevalent but also that there’s this pervasive culture of sexual harassment/rape culture,” according to Erdely’s notes of the conversation. How The New York Times is eluding censors in China

The New York Times’ English and Chinese-language websites have been blocked since an October 2012 article about the wealthy family of prime minister Wen Jiabao. But according to employees in the company, outside observers, and mainland Chinese readers, the Times is quietly pursuing a new, aggressive strategy to reach readers in China. (Quartz, 4/6)

In the world of nonprofit news, different paths to sustainability for local and state news sites

As the world of nonprofit news matures, the good news is that more news organizations are creating ways to increase their revenue and expand their audience. The bad news: They’re still heavily reliant on grants and philanthropy — leaving outlets at the whim of a few foundations or wealthy individuals. (Nieman Lab, 4/8)
