Africa Check data helps shed light on conflict-related deaths
Africa Check, one of the winners of Justin Arenstein’s African News Innovation Challenge, had a big week. Julian Rademeyer, Africa Check’s editor, will be the first journalist to take part in the Visiting Fact-Checker Program of the Duke Reporters’ Lab. Rademeyer will speak to students on the challenges of fact checking Africa and the dangerous fact-checking myths related to the Ebola crisis. Africa Check also launched new commercial services to provide team training, research and analysis for organizations.
Meanwhile, an Africa Check researcher discussed her findings on conflict-related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa in a video interview on South Africa’s Kyknet.
Interactive analysis examines deforestation policy in Brazil
Fellow Gustavo Faleiros released the interactive analysis “Deforestation Policy” (in Portuguese) on InfoAmazonia that looked at spending by the Brazilian government to preserve the Amazon. This analysis was picked up in stories by Folha de Sao Paulo, The Rio Times, Fox News Latino and Zee News India.
Investigative journalists break stories using fellows' projects and tools
In a post about ICFJ’s Investigative Reporting Initiative in the Americas (IRIA) providing tools for journalist Rafael Cabrera that helped break the story on “the White House Scandal,” ICFJ's Senior Director of Special Projects Luis Botello featured projects that fellows Miguel Paz, Sandra Crucianelli and Gustavo Faleiros helped guide.
