Looking to expand your journalism toolkit, take on a new beat or receive recognition for your work? Check out these promising courses, fellowships and competitions with deadlines in October. Each is open to journalists worldwide.

Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program: Deadline Oct. 1

The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work in multiple academic disciplines, including journalism. Stipends are funded up to US$75,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year. Click here for more information.

Wilson Center Public Policy Fellowships: Deadline Oct. 1

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is accepting applications for its nine-month residential fellowship program in Washington. Journalists who want to research and write about a specific topic while interacting with policymakers may apply. Fellowships include a stipend and 75 percent of health insurance premiums for fellows who elect center coverage. Travel costs are also covered. Click here for more information.

Mongabay.org Biodiversity Grant: Deadline Oct. 5

Mongabay.org is accepting applications from journalists to cover industry and its effects on biodiversity in Latin America. The grant will be up to US$15,000, including US$12,000 for a stipend and up to US$3,000 for travel. All applications must be submitted in English. Click here for more information.

Texas A&M ConDev Photojournalism Grant: Deadline Oct. 10

The Conflict and Development Center at Texas A&M University will present a photojournalism award to students who use innovative methods to research and chronicle issues facing conflict-afflicted nations. The winner will receive US$5,000 and must commit to a three-month period of traveling, writing and research. Click here for more information.

InternationalStudent.com Travel Video Contest: Deadline Oct. 22

InternationalStudent.com’s Travel Video Contest is open to all students who would like to study abroad. Five-minute videos must describe a trip you would like to take. The winning video will get US$4,000, and runner-up prizes will be available. Students must be 18 and older. Click here for more information.

Kiplinger Journalism Fellowships: Deadline Oct. 31

The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism offers short-term fellowships to help make better use of new online tools and channels. The fellowship will run April 26 - May 1, 2015, at Ohio State University in Columbus. The Kiplinger Foundation covers the costs of training, lodging, most meals and a travel stipend.
