Despite the proliferation of the personal blog, an internship is still one of the best ways to break into the news industry. Working with real journalists and immersing yourself in a newsroom is an invaluable experience for anyone interested in making a career out of journalism.
IJNet has put together a list of summer internship opportunities for which you still have time to apply. Ranging from large-scale national media to smaller local publications, here is a list of nine summer journalism internships to apply for in the coming months.
American Press Institute fellowships, Deadline: Jan. 7
College students and recent graduates are eligible to apply for this 12-week fellowship. To apply, the applicant must propose a fellowship project that would help news organizations. Click here for more information.
Slate summer internships, Deadline: Jan. 7
Slate is currently looking for an editorial intern in Washington, D.C. Applicants must be able to work in Washington 30 hours per week, and strong organizational skills are a must. Interns are paid according to D.C.’s minimum wage, which is US$12.50 per hour. Click here for more information.
The Nation internships, Deadline: Apr. 1
The Nation is looking for paid, full-time interns at its offices in New York. Interns will be responsible for fact-checking the magazine and its website and assisting with pushing out stories. Each intern is paid US$15 per hour, or US$525 per week. Click here for more information.
Chicago Magazine editorial internships, Deadline: Apr. 1
Journalism students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply for Chicago Magazine’s editorial internship. Interns will get to pitch stories, write and research stories and help with fact-checking. It is a paid internship, four days a week. Click here for more information.
CNN summer internships, Deadline: Varies depending on internship

NPR internships, Deadline: Varies

Time Inc. internships, Deadline: Rolling
Time Inc. is looking for college juniors and seniors with a passion for media to join their team, with opportunities open at a variety of departments, including Editorial. All interns are paid, and the program runs for eight to 10 weeks in summer 2018. Click here for more information.

The Democracy Fund is looking for undergraduate, graduate and recent students for its paid Public Square Program internship.
