Despite the proliferation of the personal blog, an internship is still one of the best ways to break into the news industry. Working with real journalists and immersing yourself in a newsroom is an invaluable experience for anyone interested in making a career out of journalism.
The deadlines for many summer internships at large newsrooms have already passed, but fortunately, IJNet has put together a list of summer internship opportunities for which you still have time to apply. Ranging from large-scale national papers to smaller local media, here is a list of nine summer journalism internships to apply for in the coming months.
Politico editorial internship, Deadline: Jan. 1
Politico is looking for enterprising and creative journalists who want to report, write and research for an audience of political and policy junkies. They recommend previous newsroom experience, working well under pressure and an avid interest in Washington. Click here for more information.
Google News Lab Fellowship, Deadline: Jan. 3
U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with a knack for tech-driven storytelling can apply for a Google News Lab Fellowship. The fellowship begins in June with a one-week stay at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California. From there, fellows will spend the next nine weeks at places like the Center for Investigative Reporting, Poynter, Nieman Journalism Lab and more. American Press Institute fellowships, Deadline: Jan.16
The American Press Institute offers paid summer fellowships to college students and recent graduates who want to advance innovation in news organizations. Unlike a summer internship, the program includes a self-proposed fellowship project. They are looking a student or recent graduate who can “envision building something from start to finish — such as a tool, resource or guide — that would help news organizations make decisions in critical areas of their work.” Click here for more information
Slate summer internships, Deadline: Feb. 26
Slate is seeking paid interns to work at its office in Washington, D.C. They must be highly organized, have a proven interest in journalism and be very familiar with Slate. They must also be able to work quickly, efficiently and without much supervision. Interns work 29 hours per week. Click here for more information.
The Nation internships, Deadline: April 1
Early-career journalists with an interest in journalism and publishing can apply for internships at The Nation. Interns will be immersed in the magazine's editorial processes, providing fact-checking and research support at the magazine's New York offices. Educational seminars with professional journalists, scholars and activists will also be available to interns. Interns are paid US$15 per hour, or US$525 per week. Click here for more information.
Chicago Magazine editorial internships, Deadline: April 1
Journalism students and recent graduates can apply for an internship with Chicago Magazine in Chicago. In addition to pitching and writing stories for the magazine, interns will offer assistance with fact-checking and research. The internship pays minimum wage, and interns work four days a week. CNN summer internships, Deadline: Varies depending on internship
Juniors, seniors and graduate students can apply to several internships at CNN. They have positions across different fields and interests. Interns will get hands-on experience at every step of the newsgathering process, and are paid at minimum wage. Click here for more information.
NPR internships, Deadline: Varies
NPR is looking for recent graduates (both undergraduate and graduate) to serve as interns for the summer of 2017. Interns work alongside NPR professionals across a variety of departments, including NPR News and Music, communications and engineering. Training opportunities are also offered.
