8 worldwide journalism opportunities to apply to in March

As a new month quickly approaches you have a fresh opportunity to reset and/or start something new. Check out these fellowships, contests and grant opportunities with deadlines next month. All are open to journalists globally. 

Environmental journalism contest 

Deadline: March 1, 2022

The Society of Environmental Journalists is accepting submissions for its annual contest on excellence in environmental reporting. The competition will honor journalists in 10 categories, including feature story and investigative reporting. Winners will receive cash prizes. 

Diversity fellowship 

Deadline: March 7, 2022

Journalists of color can apply for the Maynard 200 Journalism Fellowship, created by the Maynard Institute and Fox Corporation. Fellows will receive training on storytelling, executive leadership and more. Applicants living outside of the U.S. must be affiliated with a U.S.-based media outlet or organization.

Storytelling fellowship

Deadline: March 10, 2022

Girl Rising is seeking storytellers ages 17 to 24 who are passionate about gender equality and climate change to apply to its Future Rising Fellowship. Fellows will receive a US$5,000 stipend as they complete a narrative project that tells the story of girls or women who are working to address the impacts of environmental justice. 

Political affairs fellowship 

Deadline: March 15, 2022

Journalists with at least five years of experience who are interested in researching public policy and political affairs can apply to the Joan Shorenstein Center Fellowship, created by Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. English fluency is required. 

Investigative reporting grants

Deadline: March 20, 2022

Justice for Journalists is offering grants for investigations into crimes against journalists, freelancers and bloggers. Proposals will be accepted in English and Russian. The maximum grant is US$80,000.

Innovation fellowship 

Deadline: March 25, 2022 

Media professionals who wish to work on innovative projects that strengthen journalism’s future can apply to the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) fellowship program. Fellows will be able to take advantage of RJI’s intellectual and technological resources, as well as those at the Missouri School of Journalism. Participants will also receive a monthly stipend. 

Development reporting contest

Deadline: March 31, 2022

The European Commission is seeking journalists who are committed to defending democracy and human rights to submit their work to the Lorenzo Natali Journalism Prize. Works must have been published between March 10, 2021 and March 9, 2022. Winners will receive US$11,855.  

iPhone photography competition

Deadline: March 31, 2022

Photographers who capture images with an iPhone or iPad can submit their work to the iPhone Photography Awards. Submissions should not be altered in Photoshop or any desktop image processing program, but the use of iPhone apps is allowed.
