8 worldwide journalism opportunities to apply to in June

With summer — or winter — quickly approaching, now is an ideal time to start a new job or to learn a fresh skill. Check out these internships, competitions and grants with deadlines next month. All are open to reporters globally. 

Investigative reporting competition 

Deadline: June 1, 2022

The DIG Awards is seeking filmmakers and audio storytellers who have produced investigative works to compete in the eighth edition of the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. Filmmakers can also pitch their work for a chance to win funding to finish their projects. 

Documentary film contest 

Deadline: June 1, 2022

Journalists who produce documentaries for TV can submit their work to the URTI International Grand Prix for Documentary Films, which recognizes films that promote mutual respect and peace between people. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Rainforest journalism internship

Deadline: June 3, 2022

The Pulitzer Center is accepting applications for a remote internship with the Rainforest Journalism Fund. Recent journalism graduates with an interest in environmental issues are eligible to apply. 

Funding for filmmakers

Deadline: June 6, 2022  

Documentarians and independent filmmakers can apply for funding through the Sundance Institute Documentary Fund, created by the Sundance Institute. Interested applicants must submit a proposal and visual samples. 

War correspondents competition

Deadline: June 7, 2022

The Calvados General Council is seeking war correspondents for the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents. Entries must have been published between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022. Winners will receive cash prizes. 

Online journalism contest

Deadline: June 9, 2022

Journalists, digital news organizations and students can submit their work to the 2022 Online Journalism Awards, from the Online News Association. Entries must have been published between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022. 

Science fellowship

Deadline: June 17, 2022

The European Geosciences Union is accepting applications for the 11th edition of its Science Journalism Fellowship competition, which gives journalists the chance to follow geoscientists on location, develop an in-depth understanding of their research questions, and more. 

Investigative reporting grants

Deadline: June 30, 2022

Media outlets, journalists and freelancers are eligible to apply for the Environmental Reporting Collective’s investigative reporting grants. Grantees will receive funding to collaborate with reporters from different countries to trace environmental crimes across borders.
