Posted on May 4, 2020 in Specialized Topics

Journalists are invited to submit proposals to a criminal justice reporting grant.

The Wits Justice Project (WJP), a project of the Journalism Department of the University of the Witwatersrand, will offer reporting grants for in-depth investigations on criminal justice and related issues.

Proposals must highlight cases that point to broader systemic issues within the criminal justice system. Possible topics include wrongful convictions and exonerations, overcrowding in detention facilities, criminal justice legislation (e.g. sentencing and bail laws), and torture and abuse of inmates.

Grants can amount up to ZAR25,000.
