Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) fellowships Deadline: February 1
Each year, the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) allows journalists and media professionals to work on a project that advances innovation in journalism in Columbia, Missouri. This year’s program is seeking projects on on solving problems created by filter bubbles, fake news and mistrust of the news media, along with other topics. Residential fellows receive a US$10,000 monthly stipend and a US$10,000 housing allowance. For more information, click here.
The Fellowship in Global Journalism Deadline: February 1
Professionals in any field can report on their discipline for top media outlets around the world with the Munk School of Global Affairs’ global journalism fellowship. Participants receive mentoring from leading journalists and will be able to take courses in subjects like investigative journalism, writing, freelance tradecraft, interviewing skills and more. The fellowship covers CAD10,000 (US$7,469) of CAD26,000 (US$19,419) tuition. For more information, click here.
One World Media Awards Deadline: February 2
The One World Media Awards honor underreported stories on social, political or cultural life in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East and former Soviet republics. Metcalf Institute Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists Deadline: February 6
Journalists interested in environmental reporting can attend this workshop at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography from June 4 to 9, 2017. Participants will explore the relationship between human activity and coastal ecosystems, sharpen their investigative reporting skills and more. Room, board, tuition and up to US$500 in travel support are provided; non-U.S. participants can get travel reimbursements up to US$1,000. For more information, click here.
Knight International Journalism Awards Deadline: February 17
Nominations for this year’s Knight International Journalism Awards are open to journalists whose work has effected powerful change in the developing world. Reporters, editors, technologists, media managers, citizen journalists and bloggers are eligible. Each winner receives a US$10,000 prize and a crystal trophy at the International Center for Journalists Awards Dinner in Washington. For more information, click here.
Matthew Power Literary Reporting Award Deadline: February 21
New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute is offering story funding and support to early-career nonfiction writers. The winner will receive US$12,500, full online and onsite NYU Bobst Library privileges and more to produce a story that uncovers truths about the human condition. For more information, click here.
DW Akademie traineeships Deadline: February 22
Journalists who speak English or German can apply for this 18-month traineeship, which mixes academic study and on-the-job learning. The program includes nine months at Deutsche Welle editorial departments in Bonn, Berlin and one of its foreign bureaus in Brussels, Washington or Moscow. Trainees spend an additional month at Deutschlandradio. Trainees earn EUR1,590 (US$1,653) per month, with two raises offered during the program. For more information, click here.
