Immigration is a hot button issue in the U.S. today, especially in places like San Diego, California which sit along the country’s border with Mexico.

Journalist Maya Srikrishnan is one reporter who has been at the forefront of coverage of this issue. An immigration beat reporter for Voice of San Diego for the last two years, Srikrishnan has interviewed migrants in the city, and covered policy debates for a bi-weekly newsletter, The Border Report.

Earlier this year, Srikrishnan got to see another side of immigration to the U.S.

As a 2019 Bringing Home the World Fellow from the International Center for Journalists, Srikrishnan traveled to San Pedro Sula, Honduras — the Central American country from which the majority of migrants to the U.S. are coming today — to better understand why people decide to leave.

In Episode 3 of our podcast, IJNotes, we spoke to Srikrishnan about her trip to Honduras and the challenges and discoveries she made while reporting there. She tells us about safety concerns and difficulty building rapport, as well as her dedication to tell stories that wouldn’t sensationalize the region or the migrants choosing to travel to the U.S.
