Wilson Center fellowships Deadline: Oct. 2

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is accepting applications for its nine-month residential fellowship program in Washington. Open to journalists, scholars and public officials worldwide, fellows will conduct research and write in an area of their interest while interacting with other scholars, Wilson staff and policymakers. Fellowship available with Human Rights Watch Deadline: Oct. 6

Recent graduates from a variety of fields, including journalism, can apply for the Alan R. and Barbara D. Finberg Fellowship from Human Rights Watch. Fellows will be based in either New York or Washington for one year, beginning September 2018 and will monitor human rights developments worldwide. The salary for the program is US$60,000. Obama Foundation fellowship Deadline: Oct. 6

Journalists and other changemakers are invited to apply for the inaugural Obama Foundation Fellowship, a two-year, non-residential program that provides training, resources and leadership development. Freedom of Expression Awards Deadline: Oct. 8

Nominations are being accepted for the Index on Censorship’s Freedom of Expression Awards. Members of the public, NGOs and media organizations are invited to nominate journalists, digital activists and other free speech advocates. Winners will be flown to London in April 2018 for the awards and will also join the Index’s award fellowship program, which provides training and support. Carmignac Gestion Foundation offers photojournalism grant Deadline: Oct. 15

The Carmignac Gestion Foundation is accepting applications for it ninth annual Photojournalism Award. The award seeks to support those who will go where others will not; this year’s theme is the Arctic. The winner will receive a EUR50,000 grant for the implementation, production and promotion of an in-depth photo series. To learn more, click here.

Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellowship open Deadline: Oct. 15

Journalists, scholars and democratic practitioners can apply for the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program from National Endowment for Democracy (NED). The program aims to deepen participants’ understand of democracy and enhance their abilities to promote democratic change. Fellows must be in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington Oct. 1, 2018 to Feb. 28, 2019 and March 1 to July 31, 2019. ILO global media competition Deadline: Oct. 27

The International Labor Organization (ILO) is accepting entries for its 2017 global media competition. The contest seeks to show the positive aspects of good labor migration governance, while not overlooking the negative parts. There are two categories, written articles and photo/video/audio. Iceland Writers Retreat Alumni Award Deadline: Oct. 31

The Iceland Writers Retreat is accepting applications for its Alumni Award, which provides writers in need of financial support an opportunity to attend the retreat April 11 to 15, 2018, in Reykjavik. The retreat features small-group seminars and cultural tours and focuses primarily on literary fiction, nonfiction and memoir.
