Exploring new business models for digital news publishing

Defining the third model of news publishing, a new tool for curating content, open-sourcing the newsroom and more are found in this week's Digital Media Mash Up, produced by the Center for International Media Assistance.

Here are IJNet's picks from this week's stories:

Digital journalism: we're still waiting for the third model of news publishing

"What works" on the web is not a mystery to publishers any more. The secrets of scaling are no longer confined to a sophomore's sock drawer in a Harvard dorm. (Guardian, 4/13)

Tool for journalists: mattermap, for curating content

Mattermap, which is currently still in beta, allows users to grab snippets of online information and arrange them in a mind map which they can then embed onto their sites as a visualisation. (Journalism.co.uk, 4/15)

What we learned from the first-ever OpenNews Code Convening

OpenNews encourages newsrooms to open-source their work, but often hear that working on a deadline keeps "last-mile work and documentation that signifies a good open-source project on the to-do list." But the first Code Convening gave journalists a chance to work outside the deadline grind. (Source, 4/14)
