Press freedom center opened in Qatar

Date: 10/17/08

A new press freedom advocacy center recently opened in Doha, Qatar, by order of the country’s head of state, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

The Doha Center for the Freedom of Press is considered the first of its kind in the Middle East, according to its General Director, Robert Minard. The center was established to provide journalists in danger with help and protect them from oppression. Its founders also hope it will attract the attention of the world toward cases of press freedom.

Minard added that a statue will be established in Doha for journalists who have fallen victim while doing their job.
