Ongoing program aims to improve media coverage of science in Uganda

Date: 12/18/08

A new training initiative in Uganda seeks to bridge the communication between scientists and journalists, according to the World Federation of Science Journalists (WFSJ).

Beginning in January 2009 and lasting through 2011, the program plans to provide workshops for a total of 90 journalists to better acquaint themselves with scientists and different areas of biomedical research such as HIV vaccines, TB and malaria research.

Every three months, public forums will bring together journalists, scientists, policy makers and the public with the goal of increasing media coverage of science and its impact on policy.

Up to 150 scientists will also be trained in how to communicate better with the media and with the public.

The project is funded by a Wellcome Trust International Engagement Award, in collaboration with the University of Makerere’s Department of Mass Communications.
